Indiana reserve cop pepper-sprays infant during domestic dispute

A reserve police officer and volunteer firefighter in Indiana was arrested Tuesday on charges that he pepper sprayed an infant after a domestic dispute, local station WHAS reports.

Charles Edelen was arrested on battery and criminal recklessness charges. Court records obtained by WHAS show he was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife and the father of her child when he pepper sprayed the man and baby. He also had his gun in hand at one point.

Edelen is currently free on bond, the station reports.

It's not the first time a small child has been injured by police pepper spray devices. Last year, a Georgia SWAT team severely injured a toddler after accidentally throwing a flash-bang grenade into his playpen during a raid, CNN reports. The 1-year old sustained major injuries. He has since left the hospital and undergone multiple procedures to repair his injuries, ABC News reports.

In 2013, the NYPD was named in a lawsuit claiming they pepper sprayed three small children, including a 2 year old and 5 month old, because they suspected their mother had evaded subway fare, Courthouse News Service reports. The spray caused the 2 year old "fits of vomiting."

Clarksville is a small town on the border of Indiana and Kentucky. The city of roughly 23,000 was ranked as the second most dangerous in Indiana by Movoto Real Estate's blog, the Courier-Journal reports.
