Jan. 6 committee stepping on the gas with intriguing new testimony -- and another flurry of subpoenas

The House select committee could get its most intriguing glimpse yet into Donald Trump's actions in the days before Jan. 6 when his Justice Department deputy Jeffrey Clark complies with a subpoena and testifies before the panel.

Clark himself pushed baseless conspiracy theories about voter fraud and was nearly elevated to acting attorney general in a Trump effort to subvert the electoral process, according to a Senate investigation released last month, and a federal judge seems poised to reject the twice-impeached one-term president's claims of executive privilege over documents sought by the committee, reported CNN.

"Are you really saying that the President's notes, talking points, telephone conversations, on Jan. 6 have no relation to the matter on which Congress is considering legislation?" said Judge Tanya Chutkan. "The Jan. 6 riot happened in the Capitol. That is literally Congress' house."

The Democratic-led committee is moving forward on multiple fronts but facing Trump's efforts to obstruct their progress and the possibility that Republicans could take over the U.S. House after the 2022 midterm election and shut down the probe, and it's expected to fire off another round of subpoenas -- possibly as soon as Friday.

"Some of the people have been written about," said Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), the committee chairman. "Some of the people haven't been written about."
