Jane Sanders blasts bank fraud investigation as 'sexist' attack intended to damage husband

Jane Sanders slammed the "sexist" investigation of her alleged bank fraud as a political attack against her husband, Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The FBI is investigating her tenure as president of Burlington College, which closed last year after struggling to pay back creditors and subsequently losing its accreditation, reported the Washington Examiner.

"I find it incredibly sexist that basically he's going after my husband by destroying my reputation, and that's not OK," Sanders told the Boston Globe.

The probe began in early 2016 after Brady Toensing, vice chairman of the Vermont Republican Party and co-chair of the state's Trump campaign, filed a complaint with the U.S. attorney accusing Jane Sanders of bank fraud.

Toensing -- who is now a candidate for U.S. attorney -- started investigating her actions in 2014, well before her husband entered the presidential race, the newspaper reported.

Toensing accused Sanders of misleading a bank into financing the purchase of 33 acres of land to expand the college campus in 2010 by exaggerating potential donations to the school.

Sanders resigned as president the following year, in 2010.

"My goal is for a full, fair, and impartial investigation — that's all I care about," Toensing told the Globe. "That people be treated the same regardless of status in this system."
