'Dump him': N.Y. Times reporter warns 'political headaches' could spell end of J.D. Vance

J.D. Vance has caused nothing but headaches for Donald Trump since he was added to the Republican ticket, and it's not out of the question that he might get swapped out for someone else, a New York Times reporter warned Tuesday.

The Ohio Republican senator has been widely criticized for his remarks about "childless cat ladies" that have prompted Democrats to refer to him and other conservatives as "weird." Reporter Peter Baker told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that Trump's history suggests he might dump his running mate.

"Any normal campaign you'd say no, the presidential nominee has to stick with the person they picked and make the best of it even if it's a flawed choice," Baker said. "With this presidential nominee, you never know. You can't rule out the idea that somehow he would decide to try to find a way to dump him. I don't think it's an easy process at this point. The nomination has been conferred through a convention, changing that at this stage of the game becomes complicated for a lot of reasons."

Trump's poll lead has been largely wiped out since the Republican National Convention after President Joe Biden dropped his re-election campaign and threw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris. Polls are also showing Vance is very unpopular with voters.

"But Donald Trump has been very clear, and you made this point in the last hour, ... he's not afraid to get rid of people when he gets tired of them or decides that they're not helpful to him or he decides that somehow they're not loyal," Baker said.

"It's clear in this case that J.D. Vance is loyal, but he is seemingly at the moment causing him political headaches. It may not be enough to switch the ticket – who else would he put on there that necessarily change things who would outweigh the cost of looking indecisive and like you made a big mistake by making a choice that you then dump only a week or two later."

"I wouldn't necessarily look for that, but the idea they may be regretting it, sure," Baker added. "That's not the conversation they want to be having."
