Fox's Jeanine Pirro ruthlessly fact-checked for claiming Trump never tried to jail Clinton

Fox News' Jeanine Pirro asserted on Wednesday's edition of "The Five" that former President Donald Trump never tried to follow through on his supporters' "Lock Her Up" demands against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — but a reporter pointed out that wasn't the case.

Pirro, a former prosecutor and judge in New York, made the remarks during a discussion about Hunter Biden's criminal conviction, and President Joe Biden's reported private resentment that his son received unusually harsh treatment by prosecutors — something even the jurors who found him guilty appear to think.

"Do you believe that Donald Trump should announce that he will commute Hunter Biden's sentence if he is re-elected?" asked co-host Jesse Watters.

"I think that Donald Trump is the type of person who would do that," said Pirro. "I think the fact that he made a decision not to go after Hillary Clinton, when everybody was yelling 'Lock Her Up, Lock Her Up,' and he took a lot of heat for that, he said, you know, I want to look forward."

But that's not actually what happened, noted Semafor's Dave Weigel on X.

"Trump admin investigated Clinton and the Clinton Foundation — she sat for an interview with [federal prosecutor John] Durham — but never found anything to charge her with," wrote Weigel. "Bc there were no charges this has been retconned as Trump graciously moving on after 2016."

Republicans, for their part, have responded to Hunter Biden's conviction on federal charges for lying on a gun background check with dissatisfaction over how minor the offense was — and even some conspiracy theories that this was all cover to prevent more serious crimes from the Biden family from getting out.
