U.S. Attorney Jeanie Pirro was forced to drop a case entirely after she failed to secure an indictment.
Reuters crime and justice reporter Brad Heath posted the new filing on Bluesky in which the Justice Department asks the court to drop the case against someone who allegedly threatened to kill President Donald Trump.
"A grand jury previously declined to bring an indictment. Now the government is tossing the case entirely," explained Heath.
Nathalie Rose Jones was charged with making the threats last month after a post on Instagram called Trump a "terrorist" and a "Nazi," then "referred to President Trump’s administration as a dictatorship," charging documents from the DOJ said. She also "stated that President Trump had caused extreme and unnecessary loss of life in relation to the coronavirus."
Later in a Facebook comment, she added, "I am willing to sacrificially kill this POTUS by disemboweling him and cutting out his trachea with Liz Cheney and all The Affirmation present," the documents add.
However, in an interview with the Secret Service, she said she would only kill the president to “avenge” those who died during the pandemic. But she had no present desire to harm Trump.
Last week, the grand jury refused to indict the woman, and by Monday, her public defenders were requesting her release.
"Given that finding, the weight of the evidence is weak," the lawyers wrote of the grand jury's ruling, NBC News reported. "The government may intend to try again to obtain an indictment, but the evidence has not changed and no indictment is likely. For this reason the Court should release Ms. Jones on her personal recognizance to appear if required."
Pirro has experienced a number of legal failures in the past several weeks. This case in particular was difficult, as Pirro attempted to indict the woman at a grand jury three times. Each time failed.
