U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has convened an unusual special grand jury in Washington, D.C.
Overseen by Pirro ally Steven Vandervelden, the special grand jury sparked speculation about potential targets, according to the Washington Post.
By definition, a special grand jury differs from standard grand juries in its ability to issue potentially critical reports about the subject of an investigation. This applies even if no one is brought to trial.
Niki Kuckes, professor at Roger Williams University and an expert in grand jury procedures, warned, "They [special grand juries] are very unusual."
"Sometimes they can issue a report, which a regular grand jury can't do."
Law professor Steve Friedland also noted, "Each administration has its own approach to how it enforces the law and how it uses the tools available to it."
The Washington Post added, there is no known recent precedent for such a jury in Washington.
