'That's demonstrably false': CNN host shuts down Trump ambassador on ex-president's record
CNN host John Berman fact-checked Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) in real-time Wednesday morning when faced with questions about Gen. John Kelly and his comments about Donald Trump.
Hagerty, who previously served as an ambassador in the Trump administration, said that he never witnessed anything like what Kelly described.
"He was chief of staff and Secretary of Homeland Security while you were ambassador to Japan, did he ever lied to you?" asked Berman.

Hagerty looked confused.
"Did he ever lie to me about anything? No," he responded.
"Alright, so why doubt what he is now saying on the record out loud about his conversations?" asked Berman.
Hagerty said that it's not what he experienced with Trump and that he called the former ambassador to France to question whether Trump referred to soldiers who died at Normandy as "suckers and losers."
The former U.S. ambassador to France was Jamie D. McCourt, a large donor to Trump's 2016 campaign and former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hagerty argued that none of the issues about soldiers or the military mattered because Trump has a winning record on the economy. Berman wasn't having it.
"I'm not disputing your numbers on the wrong track. I will say depending on the economic metrics, you use, unemployment, GDP, and things like that over time. [It's] not necessarily better in the Trump administration."
Hagerty claimed wages were higher in the Trump administration and that it's all voters care about.
"You're picking one number, you are saying — you said, under every metric with me, any demographic group that's demonstrably false," Berman fact-checked again. "I'm saying there are some metrics, yes. Some metrics, no. And when you say that the economic record debunks the claim or debunks the idea that Donald Trump praised Hitler. I'm not sure that the two things are related at all."
Hagerty began suggesting there being "no wars" under Trump, despite soldiers remaining in Afghanistan. He said that President Joe Biden serving as president when there was an attack on the airport is what makes Kamala Harris unfit to lead.
"Senator, senator," Berman cut in. "I don't think anyone is questioning the sympathy or real remorse for the families of those who died in Afghanistan. That has nothing to do with the claims on the record from Gen. John Kelly, who also lost a son in Afghanistan."
Berman then used Hagerty's own words against him.
"It has nothing to do with the claims he is making on the record out loud that Donald Trump praised Hitler to him. Now, if you're going to say you don't believe them that John Kelly would have to be lying? You just told me that you don't have any reason to think that John Kelly lied to you about anything."
