Pennsylvania police chief suspended after one of his officers is charged with violent entry in Capitol riot

A Pennsylvania police chief has been suspended after one of his officers was charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

North Cornwall Township supervisors have placed police chief John Leahy on paid administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation into events leading up to Friday's arrest of officer Joseph Fischer on charges related to the U.S. Capitol riot, reported PennLive.

"The board wishes to express its confidence in the members of its police department who continue to provide public safety services to the township's residents, regardless of recent events," the township said in a statement. "The board further wishes to express its gratitude to its residents as it works to ensure that all appropriate questions are asked and measures undertaken to protect the continuing professionalism of the police department."

Fischer was suspended without pay after his arrest by federal agents on charges of obstruction of justice, obstruction of law enforcement, unlawful entry and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Investigators said the officer bragged on Facebook about his role in the riot and posted video of himself shoving police officers during the violent confrontation.

"We pushed police back about 25 feet," Fischer boasted. "Got pepper balled and OC sprayed."

Sgt. Harry Ward was named interim chief while the internal investigation is conducted.
