GOP elections board member refuses to certify Georgia primary results

A Georgia GOP county election board member is refusing to certify the results of the primary election.

Fulton County elections board member Julie Adams was a holdout in voting to certify the votes, and gave an ultimatum that she would do so only if granted access to detailed voting data, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

On May 22, a day after the state's primary, Adams sued the board and the county’s elections director, lodging accusations that she was "unable to fulfill her oath of office” and demanding that she get access to “essential election materials and processes."

The Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia filed a motion to counter Adams, suggesting the lawsuit “threatens to impair DNC’s and DPG’s interests,” including the November general election.

On Tuesday, despite Adams abstaining, the board managed to certify the May 21 election results during a special meeting.

Adams, who also serves as director for the Tea Party Patriots, is one of two board members nominated by the Fulton County Republican Party to the five-member board and was sworn in back in February.

She announced that the county “must correct the way we do our elections.”

“The important decisions are made by the (county) staff and behind closed doors,” Adams said at the meeting, according to the AJC. “The board has not and clearly should be monitoring our elections. It’s time to fix the problems in our elections.”

Party chair and U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA) called Adams' actions a ploy exacted by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his MAGA movement to preemptively block certification of November’s election should he lose in the voting count.

“This is a transparent attempt to set the stage for that fight,” she said. “The Democratic Party of Georgia will continue to combat Trump’s efforts to undermine our democracy and ensure local elections are certified, which is required by law.”

Fulton County is where Trump and 14 co-defendants face criminal charges involving a scheme to subvert President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory.

Democratic board member Aaron Johnson also argued that the board was being wrongfully maligned when performing “an exceptional job.”

“The State (Election) Board still has to certify,” Johnson said. “It’s a continual process, it’s not something that ends today. The problem that we have in Fulton County is the continuous misrepresentation of what actually is going on.”
