'Growing discontent': Former House Republican speculates Trump allies plotting to oust Kevin McCarthy
Former Republican Congressman Charlie Dent told CNN on Thursday that he believes many allies of former President Donald Trump are unhappy with Republican leader Kevin McCarthy and that they could deny him the speakership should they win back the House of Representatives.
Dent noted that it was the House Freedom Caucus that denied a bid by McCarthy to become Speaker several years ago, and they could be in position to pull a similar trick in the future.
"There seems to be a growing discontent among some members and people on the outside with Kevin McCarthy," he said.

He then pointed to comments made by former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, who was a House Freedom Caucus member at the time McCarthy last tried to become House Speaker, and who this week floated making former President Donald Trump's name as potential Speaker.
"It sounds like there is a lot of problems in terms of Kevin McCarthy ascending if he has these folks on the outside nipping at him right now," he said. "But putting Donald Trump in would be insane."
