Explosive allegations that the United Arab Emirates sent Jared Kushner $50 million after he helped oust a Trump Cabinet member have sparked fierce backlash, including demands that President Donald Trump’s son-in-law face prison time.
Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh was blunt in his reaction.
“Jared Kushner should be in jail,” Walsh wrote on social media Tuesday.
The outrage followed allegations in a new book by journalist Matthew Cole that Kushner pressed Mohamed bin Zayed, then Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, to “speed up an agreed-upon payment” after helping remove then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whose closeness to Qatar had reportedly angered Emirati leaders. Cole writes that it is unclear whether Kushner persuaded MBZ to make the payment, but that the next month the UAE sent $50 million to an account for Kushner in Cyprus.
“I keep telling you guys the Trump regime is not a government it’s a criminal enterprise,” progressive commentator and podcast host Kyle Kulinski wrote on X, adding, “We’re living in a mobocracy.”
“This book is really d---ing for Kushner,” author Karen Piper told her social media followers. In a later post, she wrote that Kushner had become a “paid-to-play operative” for a foreign government.
“If even a fraction of what is in this book is true, Jared Kushner should be in prison for decades,” Matthew Graham, founding and managing partner of RYZE Labs, posted.
Author Patrick S. Tomlinson criticized Republicans for their silence, writing on X: “The GOP: Terrified of Sharia Law, but totally silent on Muslim countries buying Trump’s entire family.”
Kushner has called the book’s claims “completely insane,” and his lawyer has denied that he sought or accepted money from MBZ or held an account in Cyprus. His attorneys have also demanded that Vanity Fair take down an earlier excerpt of the book, calling it “defamatory per se.”
Some critics doubted Kushner would face consequences.
“Accountability remains highly elusive,” wrote the account GlobalActionPW. “Perhaps the mid-terms will shift this.”
