Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty on all five counts.
Rittenhouse fatally shot two people and wounded a third with an AR-15 rifle during unrest in Kenosha on August 25, 2020. The facts in the case were largely in agreement, with prosecutors and the defense arguing over the propriety of Rittenhouse's actions.
Rittenhouse had been charged by Wisconsin with first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide, and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Charges of possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18 and failure to comply with an emergency order were dismissed.
Judge Bruce Schroeder had been harshly criticized for his management of the trial and received nationwide attention after ruling that the people killed by Rittenhouse could not be called "victims," but could be described as arsonists and looters. The judge attacked the media for coverage of his decisions.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers deployed 500 National Guard troops to Kenosha ahead of the verdict.
