Larry Wilmore takes swipe at Comedy Central cancellation by ‘stealing’ Stephen Colbert’s monologue

Larry Wilmore walked onstage Thursday night at the start of "The Late Show," in place of Stephen Colbert, as the crowd cheered and chanted his name.

That's the welcome he was accustomed to as host of the recently canceled "Nightly Show" on Comedy Central, but the audience quickly quieted down and listened a bit awkwardly as Wilmore began a monologue about Donald Trump's immigration speech.

"I haven't seen that many angry people since they canceled a Coldplay concert," Wilmore said, to polite laughter.

Then Colbert walked out, greeted Wilmore warmly and asked why he was stealing the spotlight.

"This is my show, Larry, why are you doing the monologue?" Colbert asked.

"Uh, I'm sorry, man," Wilmore stammered. "I thought whoever leaves 11:30 at Comedy Central just gets 'The Late Show,' I don't know."

Wilmore then began another Trump joke, but Colbert interrupted him and told him that's not how it works.

"It's because I'm black, isn't it?" Wilmore said, deflated.

"A little bit, yeah," Colbert said.
