Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer launched into an online tirade Friday after learning she had been named in a probe into the recent shooting of a Chicago woman by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Homeland Security officials initially claimed that 30-year-old Marimar Marínez was in a vehicle that rammed into federal agents and that one of its occupants brandished a semi-automatic weapon, prompting agents to open fire and strike her five times. Marinez’s lawyer has refuted DHS’s account of the incident, however, with body-cam footage appearing to contradict the agency’s version of events.
Now, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) is demanding answers from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, having submitted a letter with detailed questions and a Nov. 16 deadline for response. One question focuses on how Laura Loomer came into possession of photographs of Marínez’s vehicle, images she said were supplied by a “DHS source” and posted online earlier this month.
“Provide details of how Ms. Loomer received these photos and describe whether DHS is investigating the leak of alleged criminal evidence to Ms. Loomer,” the letter reads, and was obtained by Loomer.
Loomer decried Murphy for “abusing his power as a U.S. Senator,” and framed his inquiry as “anti-American activity.”
“He is denying the fact that rioters physically assaulted and tried to murder ICE agents, in his continued defense of illegal aliens during the government shutdown,” Loomer wrote in a social media post on X Friday.
“Senator Murphy’s attack on a journalist’s First Amendment rights for reporting an assault on ICE agents should come as no surprise to anyone. The Democrat[ic] Party is the party of Communism, HAMAS, and Illegal aliens. Nice to see Senate Democrats conducting witch hunts on journalist’s sources instead of reopening the government!”
Despite not having a role in government, Loomer continues to wield “breathtaking influence” in the Trump administration, having played a role in the administration’s mass firings, and potentially influencing DHS’ decision to subject all Palestinian immigrants to heightened security screenings.
And, despite her attacks on Murphy for seeking information on a potential DHS leaker, Loomer previously outed and attacked the whistleblower who submitted the complaint about Trump over his 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a complaint that ultimately led to Trump’s first impeachment.
Loomer remains a controversial figure among Trump’s most diehard supporters, having claimed to be a “
proud Islamaphobe,” and warned that the White House would “
smell like curry” if former Vice President Kamala Harris – whose mother was Indian – won the presidential election.
