'It is the law!' CNN's Camerota busts GOP lawmaker for saying Democrats can't seek Trump's taxes

CNN host Alisyn Camerota on Wednesday nailed a Republican lawmaker for falsely claiming that House Democrats have no right to seek President Donald Trump's tax returns.

During an appearance on CNN, Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) criticized Democrats for supposedly "weaponizing" tax laws in order to seek Trump's taxes, which he repeatedly promised to release while he was running for president.

Camerota, however, stopped him in his tracks and pointed out that it's very clear that the Democrats are well within their rights to ask the IRS for the president's taxes.

"It is the law that the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee is one of three people who can legally ask to see any American's tax returns," she said.

Reed tried to argue that this particular statute was only written for tax administration and wasn't intended to let Congress see the president's taxes.

Camerota then laid down the hammer by directly reading him the law.

"Let me read to you and the viewers what the law states," she said. "'Upon written request from the chairman of the Committee on the House Ways and Means' -- which is what chairman [Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA)] is -- 'the Secretary shall furnish the committee with any return except that which could be associated with or identified directly or indirectly with a particular taxpayer. That shall be furnished only in closed executive session.' So if Chairman Neal says he'll do it in a closed executive session, he has the legal right to see Mr. Trump's tax returns."

Reed simply replied that he didn't agree with that particular interpretation of the law.
