Lawyer: Bill Cosby will not comment on 'decade-old, discredited' rape allegations

After an uncomfortable interview on Saturday with Scott Simon on NPR's Weekend Edition, a lawyer for Bill Cosby released an official statement in which he said the 77-year-old comedian will not be addressing the allegations made against him in the Washington Post.

"Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced," John P. Schmitt wrote on Cosby's official website. "The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true."

"Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment," he continued.

"He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work. There will be no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives."

Renewed public interest in the allegations "resurfaced" after comedian Hannibal Buress accused Cosby of hypocrisy for allegedly raping women while lecturing the black community about its amorality.

That was followed by the disastrous "#CosbyMeme" campaign, in which representatives for Cosby asked Twitter users to "meme" the comedian and received entries like this:
