Leaked document shows Rosenstein was on his way out at DOJ — and Mueller oversight given to conflicted official

According to a leaked Justice Department document, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was on his way out the door on Monday, with an official statement prepared to announce his exit.

Axios obtained the document, which was written as coming from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and announced that Noel Francisco -- a critic of special counsel Robert Mueller -- would be overseeing his investigation.

According to the statement: "Rod Rosenstein has served the Department of Justice with dedication and skill for 28 years. His contributions are many and significant. We all appreciate his service and sincerely wish him well."

It goes on to state, "Matt Whitaker, my Chief of Staff for the last year, will instill confidence and uphold the integrity of the Department as the second highest law enforcement officer in the Nation. Finally, I am confident that Noel Francisco will oversee the special counsel with a commitment to justice as Acting Attorney General for this matter. As I have said before, the American people deserve an expeditious resolution of this investigation consistent with the rule of law."

On Monday rumors rocked Washington D.C. that Rosenstein was either going to resign or would be fired by President Donald Trump, with Trump later announcing that he would be sitting down with the embattled Justice Department official on Thursday.
