'Lordy, there were tapes!': Internet taken aback over revelation that Cohen recorded Trump talking about 'hush money'

Moments after the New York Times reported that the FBI has a recording of Donald Trump and his longtime "fixer" Michael Cohen discussing a "hush money" payout to a Playboy model, Twitter went into a virtual meltdown over the news.

"Lordy, there were tapes," Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith tweeted, echoing former FBI director James Comey's famous line during his congressional testimony about his firing by Trump last year.

"Look at Michael Cohen –– he kept those receipts," journalist Alex Morash noted. "Too bad for him that the FBI got the tapes in a raid so he can't bargain with them."

The Twitter account for Merriam-Webster dictionaries, meanwhile, trolled another part of the Times' bombshell report in which former NYC mayor and current Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani confirmed the existence of the tape before claiming it's "powerful exculpatory evidence."

"Something 'exculpatory' tends to clear from alleged fault or guilt," the dictionary's account tweeted.
