Authorities arrested a Louisiana man accused of shooting a dog he caught copulating with his own purebred pet.
Sheriff’s deputies in Jefferson Parish said 50-year-old Randall Schexnayder was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, reported The New Orleans Times-Picayune.
The Metairie man is accused of firing two gunshots May 28 at a 4-year-old Labrador mix named Raider, which escaped its yard after one of the owner’s children left a front door unlatched.
The dog returned home later that day with gunshot wounds to its muzzle and neck, but its owner said the dog was expected to recover.
The owner initially thought the dog had been struck by a car, but a veterinarian found that a bullet had struck its muzzle and exited near its mouth, and the other shot hit its neck but did not exit.
The owner said one of his neighbors had claimed March 10 that Raider had attacked him at his home, but he also remembered another neighbor who complained the animal had mounted his purebred dog.
"He threatened, 'If I catch him again, we're going to have a problem,'" said Col. John Fortunato, of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities weren't sure of the dog's breed.
Deputies said Schexnayder admitted to shooting the dog with a .22-caliber pistol after first trying to chase it away.
The dog’s owner said he wished Schexnayder had called him instead of shooting his pet.
Schexnayder was released from jail on $10,000 bond.
