Senators seek FBI's evidence against Gaetz in sex trafficking probe

Senate Democrats asked for the evidence gathered on Matt Gaetz by an FBI investigation into his alleged sex crimes.

Ten of the 11 Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter Wednesday to FBI director Christopher Wray requesting the agency's complete file on the sex trafficking investigation involving Gaetz, who Donald Trump has nominated to lead the Justice Department, reported NOTUS.

“We must be able to thoroughly review all relevant materials that speak to the credibility of these serious allegations against Mr. Gaetz,” the letter read.

The letter, which was signed by all of the panel's Democratic members except Sen. Jon Ossoff asks for all evidence from the investigation closed last year by the DOJ, saying the "grave" allegations against the attorney general nominee “speak directly to his fitness to serve as the chief law enforcement officer for the federal government.”

Democrats specifically asked for FD-302 forms memorializing interviews that were conducted, saying documents from closed investigations have been previously shared with the House and Senate, and they said the allegations were serious enough to warrant further scrutiny before confirmation hearings begin.

“The unanswered questions regarding Mr. Gaetz’s alleged conduct are particularly significant given that his associate, Joel Greenberg, pleaded guilty to the sex trafficking charge for which Mr. Gaetz was also investigated,” the letter read.

The House Ethics Committee is expected to vote Wednesday on whether to release a report on its own findings during a congressional investigation into Gaetz, who resigned immediately after his nomination was announced and a day before the report had been set for release.

The committee lost jurisdiction over Gaetz after his resignation, but ethics reports have been issued in the past on other former lawmakers after they left Congress.
