The View's Meghan McCain explains why Nikki Haley will never be the GOP frontrunner
"The View" co-host Meghan McCain thinks Nikki Haley made a politically fatal gamble on former president Donald Trump.
The former South Carolina governor and Trump's ambassador to the United Nations said the former president deserved a "break" shortly after inciting the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection, but she told Politico that Republicans "shouldn't have followed him" -- and McCain said Haley had cost herself a shot at becoming the GOP nominee for president.
"Nikki Haley wants to be president, she's making no qualms about it," McCain said. "It's obvious she's going to be running for president, I don't think she's someone that's going to be the frontrunner because I don't think that you can really vacillate between these two lanes. I think you're going to have to take a choice like the way someone like Matt Gaetz has done and the way someone like Liz Cheney has done. Make that gamble, and figure out where you think it's going to be, a Trump party or an anti-Trump party."
"What's difficult for me is, you know, going into 2024, I wasn't a Trump person, but I'm not a never-Trump person, either," she added. "I wasn't someone who became a leftist, who gave up all my conservative ideals and decided that the party was irredeemable. I didn't pretend to be a conservative, I'm a real one, and I think that there has to be a place for those of us that don't want to become Democrats, that aren't just going to easily vote for anything that isn't Trump, and so it'll be interesting to see how many politicians follow suit."
