Meghan McCain more offended by Ivanka’s lack of ‘optics’ than border policy separating migrant kids from parents

"The View" co-host Meghan McCain admitted she was more offended by Ivanka Trump's clumsy political skills than the immigration crisis she's accused of ignoring in a tone-deaf social media photo.

The president's daughter tweeted a photograph of herself cuddling her 2-year-old son, as other Twitter users grappled with a Trump administration policy separating migrant children from their parents at the border -- and reports that U.S. authorities had lost track of nearly 1,500 children seeking asylum.

"This happened under Bush and Obama," McCain said, agreeing with co-host Sunny Hostin's argument that President Donald Trump was not responsible for policies that allowed the government to lose track of those children. "This is long-standing laws that are just being enforced right now."

Ivanka Trump was criticized online for ignoring those concerns to share the professional-quality photo of herself and her toddler son, and McCain agreed the president's daughter and White House adviser should have known better.

"If we want to talk about optics, I'm sure she was just like, 'This is a beautiful photo of me and my son, I'm going to post it, etc., etc.,'" McCain said, "but yes, when you are the special adviser to the president of the United States of America, whether they like it or not, they got to think about optics."

McCain said those blunders were bad because they gave political capital to their opponents, but co-host Joy Behar said the post was insensitive to immigrant families separated by controversial U.S. policies.

"I don't know her so I can't pontificate on it," McCain said. "I don't know her, but I will say that clearly just -- it's fascinating to me that like a year and a half plus into this administration that they still don't seem to care about the politics of being a politician."

McCain said that, to her, was the real outrage.

"That insults me," McCain said. "Again, for no other reason, say you don't care about these children at the border -- I don't believe that, she probably does -- but you should care that it looks tone-deaf to some people. I wasn't as offended as a lot of other people, but a lot of people were tweeting about this over the weekend."
