'Roller coaster': Speaker Mike Johnson admits market 'tumult' caused by Trump

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) conceded to CNN's Manu Raju Tuesday that President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office have destabilized markets, the Daily Beast reported.

“I’m not worried at all" about Trump Johnson initially said when Raju asked him about his recent meeting with the president. “He’s in good spirits. We talked about the upcoming races, the midterm elections, and we’re very bullish on it.”

But When Raju followed up with, “Why is the American public souring on his policies?” Johnson replied, “Listen, you know, presidential terms are roller coasters sometimes.

"There’s been a little tumult in the markets with the tariff policy and all of that, but I think all this is settling out.”

Despite that, Johnson insisted, the GOP would be playing to try to win a larger majority in the 2026 midterms.

This is despite the fact that Trump's polling numbers have collapsed, particularly with independents. CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten has said if numbers continue as they are, there is "zero chance" Republicans can retain their House majority.

Trump's tariff uncertainty, compounded by his repeated adjustments and pauses of various tariffs and lack of discrimination against foreign allies and adversaries, has businesses and even some members of his own party alarmed. Observers have suggested it is shaping not just politics domestically but abroad, playing a factor in Canada's Liberal Party coming from behind to retain their majority in this week's elections.
