A Muslim mayoral candidate has received death threats on social media since announcing her campaign.
Regina Mustafa said she started receiving hateful social media messages since announcing Feb. 5 that she was running for mayor of Rochester, Minnesota, reported the Post Bulletin.
She said an account called "Militia Movement" threatened to "EXECUTE all muslims in America" in response to a June 2017 post on her Google Plus account, which she reported to police.
"It was more of a general threat to all Muslims in America, but since this person did take the time to search me out and leave this comment, I took it as a specific threat," Mustafa told the newspaper. "You have to take any kind of threat seriously, so that we have this on file that this did happen."
Mustafa said she's received a number of anti-Muslim messages since entering the mayoral race, although she said none of the others were as menacing as the threat she reported.
However, Mustafa received a previous threat in August on her YouTube account while running for Minnesota's 1st Congressional District seat.
"Tell regina she is lower then a jewishh wh**** used tampon she will be shot," that commenter said.
Mustafa said she won't let the threats change her view of Minnesota or her hometown.
"It will not make me give up the overall good nature that I know is represented in the people of Minnesota and the country as a whole," Mustafa said. "I'll be more cautious going forward, but I'm not going to let it change or alter my course in the campaign."
