An in-home caregiver fled from a reporter's questions after leaving Sen. Mitch McConnell's house.
The woman was approached by independent journalist Nicholas Ballasy outside the Republican senator's home and briefly answered questions as she arrived to care for the ailing 84-year-old, who has not been seen publicly since he was hospitalized June 14 following a serious fall.
"No, I am a home care, home caregiver," the woman said, and the reporter asked if she had been there before. "No, this is my first time. Now I can go?"
She told the reporter she was scheduled to stay overnight, and he encountered her again leaving McConnell's residence – but she declined to answer questions and quickly bolted to a waiting car.
"How's Mr. McConnell doing?" Ballasy asked as she walked away. "Does he seem like he's in good health?"
The former GOP Senate leader's office announced Thursday that McConnell had been discharged from a rehabilitation center to recover at home, but his staff did not set a timeline for his return to official duties.
Speculation has swirled around McConnell's health since his hospitalization, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear repeatedly pressed him for answers about his health issues.
McConnell, the third-oldest currently serving senator, plans to retire when his term ends in January.
