Legendary Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein on Tuesday broke news that special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating a 2017 meeting between former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno.
Appearing on CNN, Bernstein said that Mueller has specifically been asking whether the two men discussed WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange, who has for years been living inside Ecuador's embassy in the United Kingdom.
According to Bernstein's sources, Mueller and his team have been "intensely interested" in what the meeting means when it comes to "Manafort, WikiLeaks and contacts with Assange."
Earlier on Tuesday, the Guardian reported that Manafort met directly with Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2016, shortly before he joined the Trump campaign.
Bernstein said that Manafort traveled to Ecuador to meet the country's chief of state in 2017 and he says Mueller has been following leads related to the meeting "for well over a year."
