Nicolle Wallace connects the dots on the Jared Kushner security clearance scandal: ‘A network of coordinated lies’

MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace on Friday explained the staggering scope of the scandal over Jared Kushner's security clearance.

"On the fourth day of what's already been nominated for the worst week of Donald Trump's presidency, a bombshell -- with something for everyone," Wallace reported. "A Trump lie so big the Trump family and their lawyer appear to be in on it. A national security threat so dire, two of the most senior West Wing advisers warned against it."

"And the new hallmark of a Trump scandal -- contemporaneous memos chronicling the transgression," she continued.

"In this case the story involved the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner and his pursuit of a security clearance. Turns out there was never an all-clear given to Jared, there was never a decision Jared Kushner could be trusted with the nation's most sensitive secrets," she noted.

Wallace then read from the bombshell New York Times report.

"President Trump ordered his chief of staff to grant his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, a top-secret security clearance last year, overruling concerns flagged by intelligence officials and the White House’s top lawyer, four people briefed on the matter said," The Times reported.

"Trump’s decision in May so troubled senior administration officials that at least one, the White House chief of staff at the time, John F. Kelly, wrote a contemporaneous internal memo about how he had been 'ordered' to give Mr. Kushner the top-secret clearance," the newspaper continued.

"The White House counsel at the time, Donald F. McGahn II, also wrote an internal memo outlining the concerns that had been raised about Mr. Kushner — including by the C.I.A. — and how Mr. McGahn had recommended that he not be given a top-secret clearance," The Times continued.

Wallace is personally familiar with the security clearance process. Before her career in journalism, she served as a senior official in the George W. Bush White House.

"This reporting also reveals a network of coordinated lies," Wallace noted.

She then played clips of Trump, his daughter Ivanka Trump, and Kushner's defense attorney Abbe Lowell all making public statements to reporters that are contrary to The Times reporting.
