Sen. Cory Gardner has joined the ranks of Republicans criticizing President Donald Trump for claiming he can pardon himself.
"No one’s above the law,” Gardner told the Denver Post Friday. “I think if he were to try, it would be a really bad idea.”
The Colorado senator is the latest in a string of Republicans who either condemned the president's self-pardon claim or said they don't believe he has the authority to do so. Most notable among them is House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) who on Wednesday said Trump "obviously" shouldn't pardon himself.
Early on Monday morning, Trump tweeted that he has the "absolute" right to pardon himself, but wouldn't be doing so because he'd "done nothing wrong." The claim came after his attorney, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, repeatedly told reporters and pundits that the president has the constitutional right to self-pardon.
