Oklahoma mom reports boy missing — but he was out trying to raise money to buy her Christmas presents

An Oklahoma City mom called police last week in a panic to report her teenage son missing -- but she soon discovered a heartwarming secret.

Sophia Reed moved her family into an apartment recently using the last of her money, which included money for Christmas presents, reported KFOR-TV.

"What little Christmas money we had, you know, to pay my security deposit for here," Reed said.

Reed called police last week after her 13-year-old son Diauris failed to return home, and he returned after officers found him collecting cans.

"I just wanted to do something for my mama," Diauris told the TV station.

His sister Deneisha suggested the plan, but she didn't want to spoil the secret despite her mother's worry.

"I was afraid he was going to get in trouble," Deneisha said. "I was very afraid he was going to get in trouble. I just didn't want to say anything because it would blow the whole thing."

The boy's effort touched Officer Roland Russell, and he invited others to meet the family.

"There was so many knocks on my door, everybody just was knocking, just was knocking, and every time I opened my door it was the police, the police," Sophia said.

The officers raised $800 to buy Christmas presents and housewarming gifts for the family.

"Most of the time when I see the police it's like, bad stuff," Diauris said. "Up here, I guess it's changed -- good."

The family said they hope to find work so they can help someone else this time next year.
