Oops: Creationist digs up 60 million year old fossil in basement — but still says Earth is 6,000 years old

Canadian Creationist Edgar Nernberg has struggled to defend his claim that the Earth is only 6,000 years old this week after he dug up a fossil that scientists say is 60 million years old.

According to CBC, Nernberg works for a local excavation company in northwest Calgary and came across a school of fish fossilized in sandstone while he was digging a basement in a new development.

University of Calgary paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky said that it was very rare to find complete fossils from this time period.

But Nernberg, who volunteers at a museum that teaches humans lived alongside dinosaurs, told the Calgary Sun that he wasn't buying it.

“There’s no dates stamped on these things,” Nernberg quipped.

Ironically, Zelenitsky pointed out that Nernberg would not have noticed the fossil if he had not had an interest in creationism.

“He was excavating a basement when he saw them, so it was a total fluke," Zelenitsky said. "He’s apparently interested in fossils, and that’s probably how he saw them. An ordinary person might have just seen blobs in the rock.”

For his part, Nernberg was hoping to display the fish at the Creation Museum but he said that he would settle for a cast of the fossil.

“If I had my druthers, I’d want them in the (Creationist) museum. This is certainly the coolest thing I’ve found over the years,” Nernberg admitted.
