Oregon Dem compares Trump to Marie Antoinette -- the beheaded 'Let them eat cake' queen of France

Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley (OR) said on Saturday that for President Donald Trump to tweet angrily at the citizens and public officials of Puerto Rico while he languishes in his New Jersey golf resort is as egregious as the indulgences of France's Queen Marie Antoinette -- who was beheaded in a peasant uprising.

The Hill said that Merkley was responding to Trump's tweets attacking San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz's leadership and accusing the Puerto Rican people of being lazy and expecting "everything to be done for them" by the government.

"Trump plays Marie Antoinette: Sits at his golf club while Puerto Rico suffers," wrote Merkley on Twitter, "then attacks San Juan Mayor for 'poor leadership.'"

Marie Antoinette and her husband King Louis XVI were jailed in the French Revolution after years of living in decadent excess including the splendor of Versailles Castle. When the queen was informed that the peasants had no bread to eat, she reportedly -- and possibly apocryphally -- asked why they couldn't then eat the richer, sweet bread brioche, i.e. "cake," instead.

Both the king and queen were beheaded at the guillotine.

Trump spent the day on Saturday sending tweet after tweet about the situation, prompting a stiff reaction from former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean (D):
