Orlando gunman's father was an FBI source before and after 2015 Pulse nightclub massacre

The father of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen was an FBI source before and after the 2015 nightclub massacre, according to newly revealed court documents.

The revelations came during the trial of Mateen's wife, Noor Salman, who is accused of knowing about the plot but failing to stop the deadly Pulse nightclub shooting, reported WKMG-TV.

Prosecutors sent an email Saturday that revealed Seddique Mateen, the gunman's father, had worked as a confidential FBI source from 2005 through June 2016, according to a motion filed by Salman's defense attorneys.

Salman's attorneys argued the disclosure came too late for them to investigate whether Seddique Mateen knew of his son's plans to shoot up the nightclub on June 12, 2016, and they have called for a mistrial.

The elder Mateen is also reportedly under investigation for suspicious money transfers to Pakistan and Turkey that came to light after the nightclub shooting that left 49 people dead and injured at least 68 others.

Prosecutors rested their case Thursday against Salman, who was charged with providing material support to a foreign terror organization, the Islamic State group, and with obstructing justice.

Her attorneys were scheduled to begin their defense on Monday.
