White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday insisted that President Donald Trump has never encouraged violence, despite having a long history of doing just that.
"I certainly don't think that the president, at any point, has done anything but condemn violence," Sanders said while talking with reporters on the White House lawn. "In fact, every single time something like this happens, the president is typically one of the first people to condemn the violence."
What Sanders said, however, is flatly false.
In 2015, Trump said that a protester at one of his rallies "maybe should have been roughed up" after he was punched by a Trump supporter.
In 2016, Trump encouraged supporters to "knock the crap out of" protesters at one of his rallies while promising to pay for their legal fees.
In 2018, Trump praised a Republican lawmaker who admitted to body slamming a reporter.
"Any guy that can do a body slam, he’s my kind of... he's my guy," Trump said.
Given Trump's consistent track record of promoting violence, her claim was met with disgust and derision across the internet.
