House censures Paul Gosar for video depicting murder of AOC — and only two Republicans vote yes

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to censure Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) for posting an anime cartoon depicting him murdering Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

"The House voted 223-207, with only two Republicans voting in favor of the censure — Reps. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Liz Cheney of Wyoming," NBC News reports. "The resolution also removes him from the two House committees he serves on, Oversight and Reform and Natural Resources."

Gosar's censure was the first in Congress since 2010 and only the 24th in U.S. history, according to the New York Times, which called House Republicans' overwhelming opposition to the censure resolution "the latest sign of the party's growing tolerance of menacing statements."

"The vote, and the incendiary, emotional and personal debate leading up to it, laid bare the divisions of the moment, when Democrats say they must speak out against vicious threats and imagery that can give rise to the kind of violence that unfolded during the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol," the Times reports. "Republicans, giving voice to the grievances of their political base, contended that their rights as the political minority were being trampled by an unfettered and out-of-control Democratic majority. They said the rapid move to pass a censure resolution belied the Democrats' true agenda: silencing conservatives and tarring all Republicans with the violent wishes of a few."
