Rep. Alan Grayson accuses wife of bigamy, defamation in divorce filing

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) claimed in a divorce filing that his marriage should be annulled because his wife was still married to another man when they wed 24 years ago.

The lawmaker also accused Lolita Grayson of defamation for accusing him of battery in March and seeking a restraining order against him.

Lolita Grayson filed for divorce in January.

Her estranged husband’s counterpetition refers to their 1990 union as a “bigamous marriage,” claiming Lolita Grayson of falsely representing herself as single when they met in 1985.

She claimed she was divorced in 1981 when the couple filed for a marriage license.

Alan Grayson claimed in the filing that his wife secretly divorced her previous husband, Robert Carson, in 1994.

His divorce lawyer, Richard West, said he discovered the marriage overlap during a background check on Lolita Grayson.

The counterpetition seeks a court order declaring the couple’s marriage invalid and an accounting of all money and property Lolita Grayson has received so they can be returned to her husband.

Lolita Grayson dropped her petition for a restraining order after Alan Grayson’s attorneys released video that they said contradicted her allegations.

The lawmaker was not arrested in the March 1 incident.
