LISTEN: Rep. Mo Brooks recounts gruesome details from shooting of GOP's Steve Scalise and aides

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) called into CNN shortly after the shooting that took place in the Del Rey neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia, while the Republican members were practicing for a charity event.

"The gun is a semi-automatic and it continues to fire," Brooks told CNN.

According to Brooks the gunman was hiding behind the dugout when he opened fire. Rep. Steve Scalise was hit in the leg. Capitol police returned fire but Brooks said that it was the difference between a "pistol and a rifle." He said that he heard 10-20 shots before "our side" was able to return fire.

Brooks said that he saw the shooter and realized that if he can see the shooter the shooter could see him and that he was the nearest person to the shooter.

"The shooter shot both of our security detail people... eventually the shooter starts circling third base around to home plate where we were," Brooks said. He said that he ran to the staffer shot in the leg and took off his belt to apply a tourniquet to minimize blood loss.

Fox News also reported that Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) was also shot.

Scalise then crawled from the outfield to the dugout and they put pressure on his hip to help him as well.

"He was shot in the hip. I think it was not a life-threatening wound. I don't think it was a life threatening wound, I'm not a physician ... there was no exit wound," Brooks said.

"Two of the injuries appeared serious. Scalise was alert the whole time and then there was one of our security detail that was lying next to the security vehicle with a towel over his head and was being treated and he was immobile," Brooks said.

"The most frustrating thing is when you see your friends lying on the ground and you can't do anything to help... to have someone next to you bleeding profusely from his leg ... he kept saying, 'I'm OK. I'm OK.' But you see the bullet hole in his leg, he's not OK," Brooks continued.

He later said that he heard Scalise scream but he didn't remember what he screamed.

Brooks also said that they were lucky to have Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), a doctor and former Army Reserve officer, there with them.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) praised Capitol Police for their quick response. "It would have been a massacre without them."
