'They're going to steal this election': Morning Joe issues dark warning about Mike Johnson
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough issued a dark warning about new House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and the future of American democracy.
The Louisiana Republican tried to help Donald Trump remain in power despite his 2020 election loss, and the "Morning Joe" host said the twice-impeached, four-times-indicted former president is putting an infrastructure in place that could return him to the White House regardless of next year's election results.
"Why do you think Trump fought [Rep. Tom] Emmer so much?" Scarborough said. "He didn't go along with the lie, the conspiracy. Yeah, these things are decided in the House. Donald Trump has his guy. He has the anti-democracy guy in the speaker's chair. I saw some press conference, a clip where a reporter asked a question and everybody started screaming. I almost said a word I've said on this air a couple of times. I'll just say, what fools. Who do they think we are? Who do they -- do they think Americans are that stupid?"
GOP lawmakers jeered and booed a reporter this week for asking Johnson about his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, and Scarborough said that showed their disdain for democracy.

"They're all election deniers up there," Scarborough said. "They're mad at the press for bringing up the fact that Donald Trump now has his tool to move us towards an autocratic state where democratic elections don't matter. He's already done it. He led the charge to overturn a presidential election. Yeah, we know what's going to happen. We know all these presidential elections end up in the House. Donald Trump is thinking, 'I got this.'"
Election denialism has become normalized as a Republican Party value, and Scarborough said that posed a grave threat to future elections.
"We're worried about the future," Scarborough said, as producers rolled the clip of Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and other Republicans heckling the reporter. "Put a mirror in front of your face – you shut up. I mean, these people try to overturn American democracy. We saw it. He led the effort in the House, then they're shocked at the question. Why? Because they don't want to talk about it because they're already planning."
"They've already got this figured out," he added. "They've got Donald Trump's guy in there, and they're going to steal this election in the House of Representatives with this speaker, who led -- you say shut up? We're not going to shut up, you shut up. If you want to overturn American democracy, we don't want to hear what you have to say. Keep it to yourself, but we'll never shut up, because these are the people that tried to end the American experiment because their guy didn't win, because a failed reality TV show host didn't win. So those are the stakes. That's really what's happened. Donald Trump has found the guy that will gladly pave the way to an autocracy where democratic elections don't matter."
