Republican ‘pro-life’ congressman who asked his mistress to get an abortion to quit early

Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) will resign Oct. 21, according to a statement from Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI).

"It was Dr. Murphy's decision to move on to the next chapter of his life, and I support it," the statement read. "We thank him for his many years of tireless work on mental health issues here in Congress and his service to the country as a naval reserve officer."

Murphy's former lover revealed text messages this week attacking him for his so-called "pro-life" stance after he asked her to have an abortion when she was pregnant. Murphy has maintained throughout his career that he was "pro-life," but admitted to his lover that it wasn't exactly accurate and made it seem as though he was placating to the right-wing anti-choice movement.

The resignation comes less than a week after Murphy said he would retire at the end of his term.
