Republicans find new ways to humiliate themselves and keep the Melania plagiarism story in the news

The fact that Melania Trump delivered a speech on Monday that swiped lines from a 2008 Michelle Obama speech shouldn't be a very big story -- in theory.

Most normal campaigns would admit the error, hold the speechwriter who committed plagiarism accountable, and then promptly move on to other business.

However, this is the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump, and admitting error is something that he never, ever does.

Because of this, both the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee have gone to ridiculous lengths to defend Melania's honor and to deny that her speech plagiarized anything. Below we'll go through some of the most ridiculous ways Republicans have humiliated themselves while managing to keep the plagiarism story in the headlines.

Let's start with RNC chief strategist Sean Spicer, who pointed out that there were also similarities between Melania's speech and a quote from My Little Pony character Twilight Sparkle.

Not to be outdone, Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson defended Melania against charges of plagiarism by noting that English isn't her first language. While this is indeed true, it also has nothing to do with the fact that her speechwriters cribbed lines from another person's speech:
