Three days after voters told Donald Trump they'd had enough, he answered by offering them more than enough: Stephen Miller.
Elevating Miller to White House chief of staff is a brutal offense to the American people and the world. It's a declaration of war on the voters who just handed Democrats both the House and the Senate. Anyone hoping for a chastened president who might work with Congress on prices, the Iran war, or the corruption swirling around his administration should stop such foolish thinking.
Trump isn't giving an inch, and he will give Miller a mile.
In my view, and that of many others, Miller is the most dangerous man in this administration, and that is saying a lot. He is ruthless. He is a xenophobe. He is a white nationalist, and just about every other phobe there is in the lexicon.
And now this insidious fascist Nazi vampire has his bloodthirsty teeth in the neck of the stupid and pliable Donald Trump.
This isn’t an exaggeration. Miller was the chief architect of the 2018 "zero tolerance" policy that ripped thousands of migrant children from their parents at the border. He drove the Muslim travel bans, the assault on DACA, and the slashing of refugee admissions. In his current role, he has coordinated daily enforcement directives across ICE, CBP, and the FBI to expand mass arrests and detentions.
The masked agents on your street corners who are gunning down innocent Americans — that’s Stephen Miller’s proudest moment.
In 2019, the Southern Poverty Law Center published more than 900 messages Miller sent to Breitbart editors in 2015 and 2016. They showed him pushing white nationalist literature and material from fringe, hate-adjacent outfits like VDARE, along with The Camp of the Saints, a racist novel beloved by the far right.
This is a blatantly proud racist, and he will be Trump’s right-hand man. I can only think that this is Trump’s sinister retribution for Black voters turning out in droves in the midterms and voting overwhelmingly against him. He has brazenly just lit a burning-cross fire under them, and they will have the last word. Guaranteed.
If all that isn’t bad enough, Miller embraces the "Great Replacement" conspiracy rhetoric, i.e. white Christians only. He sees America's demographic change as an enemy to be defeated rather than a country to be led. He is also a one-man wrecking crew for DEI.
For two years, pundits said that Susie Wiles was the adult in the room. I never bought it. I never saw her slow Trump down on anything that mattered. Seriously, what did she do? Trump has run roughshod over the Constitution, the White House, the National Mall, Americans, and the world. But whatever thin restraint she supposedly provided is gone.
Miller has also made no secret of his contempt for diplomacy, arguing that America should project raw power rather than bother with traditional norms. From Venezuela to Iran, he has pushed for aggression, peace be damned. He gives the order to Trump, Trump gives it to Hegseth, and all hell breaks loose.
Our allies have spent two years wondering whether Trump is a partner or a threat. With Miller whispering in Trump’s no-bullet-wound ear, expect them to stop wondering. What a miserable slight Miller will be to our allies.
Elevating Miller is like sticking two fingers in both of Congress’s metaphorical eyes. Congress now has the power and the duty to investigate this administration. Miller will ignore subpoenas and stonewall on everything Congress asks for. The corruption inquiries are coming, and he is the man Trump has chosen to deal with them.
In every conceivable way, Miller will be a horror show. I shudder to think what he will try to get away with. The chief of staff job has traditionally been the most powerful in Washington, and for someone of Miller’s ilk to hold this position is beyond shocking.
I don’t think anyone can imagine what he’s capable of.
Voters stormed into polling places this week and said, as plainly and loudly as they could, that they wanted something different. Something above board. Something with morals and principles. Trump looked at the results and decided to hire the ugly, nefarious, macabre face of everything they rejected.
Every corruption scandal, every ICE raid, every separated family, every executive order drafted in his dark and demented mind will carry Miller’s filthy fingerprints.
Stephen Miller has no morals, no scruples, no decency, no empathy, no respect for democracy, no respect for the law, no respect for order, no respect for America, and no respect for world order. He is an evil disaster of epic proportions, and Donald Trump just put him in charge.
Now, more than ever, we need a Democratic Congress to fight hard against him.
