You probably remember the dust-up regarding Seamus the dog: Mitt and Ann Romney strapped their dog Seamus to the roof of their car for the duration of a twelve-hour road trip from Boston to Ontario. SeamusGate became a thorn in the Romney campaign's side in 2008, and the issue continues to dog them.
During an interview with Diane Sawyer today, the Romneys tried to undo some of the damage that SeamusGate has caused, and failed miserably:
DIANE SAWYER: As we move away from this primary campaign into the next phase– again, on Yahoo, we got two questions most often, first about Seamus– which as you know is out there forever– would you do it again?MITT ROMNEY: Certainly not with the attention it’s received.
DIANE SAWYER: You said it was the most wounding thing in the campaign–
ANN ROMNEY: It’s crazy.
DIANE SAWYER:–so far.
ANN ROMNEY: The dog loved it. The dog was, like–
DIANE SAWYER: But the dog got sick, right?
ANN ROMNEY: Once, he– we traveled all the time and he– he ate the turkey on the counter. I mean, he had the runs. But– he would see that crate and, you know, he would, like, go crazy because he was going with us on vacation. It was to me a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for t– in– in– in a kennel for two weeks, so.
You have to love Mittbot's response to the question. When asked whether he would do it again, instead of saying "no," (like a normal human (or humanoid) would) Mittbot says "not with the attention that it has received."
*blink*
In other words, Mittbot is happy to strap ALL THE DOGS to the roof of his car, as long as no one finds out about it. He doesn't care that dogs are not supposed to travel for long distances strapped to the roof of a car; he only cares about how "dog on roof" (or anything he says or does) will play with voters.
For her part, Miss Ann tries to convince Diane Sawyer that the dog simply loved being strapped to the roof of the car, and claims that Seamus would jump into the kennel, happy to be traveling with the family on vacation. Yes, Ann, dogs are usually happy to be brought along on vacation. Dogs are not, however, happy to be strapped to the roof of a car for twelve hours. I couldn't imagine strapping my dog Nate Dogg to the roof of my car, in a kennel or otherwise, for any length of time, much less for a twelve-hour road trip. When I go on road trips, and Nate Dogg comes with me, he rides inside the car.
The mind reels. Seriously -- who the hell straps a dog to the roof of their car? For twelve hours? It's madness. Even Newt Gingrich agrees!
