Sanders throws support behind primary opponent of DNC head Wasserman Schultz

Tensions between Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz over accusations that she sides against him in favor of his opponent, Hillary Clinton, may have reached a peak Saturday, with Sanders announcing his support for Wasserman Schultz' own political opponent.

Sanders told CNN, in an interview slated to air Sunday, that he favors Tim Canova, who is challenging Wasserman Schultz for her congressional seat in Florida, Politico reports.

Sanders told CNN's Jake Tapper, "“well, clearly, I favor her opponent. His views are much closer to mine than as to Wasserman Schultz’s.”

Politico reports Canova is facing off with Wasserman Schultz for her seat on Florida's 23rd congressional district, where a primary is to be held August 30.

Sanders also said he wouldn't want Wasserman Schultz leading the DNC if he were elected president in November.

The Sanders campaign has been at odds with Democratic party leadership, which reached a chaotic crescendo last week during a convention in Las Vegas.
