Lawyers for convicted J6 rioters furious over Sidney Powell's 'obscene' plea deal

News that former Donald Trump lawyer Sidney Powell worked out a plea deal that will keep her out of jail after being a major player in trying to subvert the 2020 presidential election is not being well received by some attorneys for Jan. 6 rioters whose clients are currently serving time in prison for their part in the insurrection.

On Thursday, Powell agreed to the deal in the Georgia racketeering case that also includes former president Donald Trump, which keeps her out of jail as long as she continues to cooperate with investigators. Then on Friday, another Trump lawyer, Kenneth Chesebro, who was neck-deep in the 2020 fake electors plot received a similar deal with no jail time.

Those deals have infuriated attorneys who represented Jan. 6 participants who were never offered similar slap-on-the-wrist offers.

According to a report from Politico, one lawyer claimed they were "gobsmacked" at how gently the two Trump lawyers were treated.

Bjorn Brunvand, whose client appeared before Judge Tanya Chutkan for assaulting Capitol Police officers, is serving 63 months in prison was stunned by the deals.

“Gobsmacked is certainly an appropriate description considering the sentences that have been imposed against others who believed the lies spread by Donald Trump, Sidney Powell and others,” he stated before adding, "The rules we all share are not applied equitably to all. Frequently, deals are made with the highest-ranking players in criminal conspiracies, while the pawns receive the most significant sentences.”

Attorney Carmen Hernandez, who represented Proud Boy Zachary Rehl among others, was blunter than Brunvand, telling Politico, "This is sick and scandalous. There are J6 defendants with no priors who’ve served jail time. … It’s obscene given that she was a prominent attorney and was one of the leading and loudest of the ‘stolen election’ BS.”

Proud Boy Joseph Biggs lawyer Norm Pattis, added, "Ms. Powell must have offered Georgia a lot for this deal. In the meantime, ordinary J6 defendants, who listened to her, get severe sentences. None of this promotes respect for the law.”
