Senate Democrats have successfully removed part of President Donald Trump's “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which would have blocked “federal government policies with injunctions or restraining orders,” according to a report from NBC.
According to a Democratic aide, the rule was removed because “it did not comply with the ‘Byrd rule,’ which says provisions must be directly related to taxes or spending.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was happy with the move, saying in a statement, “Senate Republicans tried to write Donald Trump’s contempt for the courts into law — gutting judicial enforcement, defying the Constitution, and bulldozing the very rule of law that forms our democracy."
Schumer later added, "It was nothing short of an assault on the system of checks and balances that has anchored this nation since its founding, and a brazen attempt [to] crown Trump king. But Senate Democrats stopped them cold. We successfully fought for [the] rule of law and struck out this reckless and downright un-American provision.”
NBC reports, “The language added to the bill would have required anyone seeking an injunction to pay a fee that would be equal to ‘the costs and damages sustained by the federal government’ if it were to ultimately win the case.”
The outlet claimed GOP Senate members added the provision after a “ flurry of federal court rulings that have stymied President Donald Trump's domestic agenda.”
President Donald Trump has railed against several judges, some of whom he appointed, for placing nationwide injunctions on some of his executive orders or for not ruling in favor of his administration.
A spokesperson for Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said, "Republicans are committed to enforcing the rule of law, and will continue using all available avenues to secure our borders, clean up the mess left by the Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous policies, and ensure courts operate according to lawful and constitutional standards.
