Storms trash Calif. beaches, bring snow to AZ, NM

SEAL BEACH, Calif. -- Many in California and Arizona are in clean-up mode after a stormy week.

Hundreds of residents who evacuated from communities in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills north of Los Angeles have returned home to assess the damage. Despite widespread fears about mudslides, there have been no major reports of damage.

But mounds of trash and debris have fouled many area beaches.

In Arizona, about half of the 500 residents of a small western Arizona town that was flooded have returned to muddied streets and damaged homes.

Yavapai County police have announced they've found the body of a 6-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters.

At higher elevations in Arizona, forecasters are warning of blowing and drifting snow.

Winter weather and wind advisories have been issued for southern New Mexico where heavy snow is expected.

Harsh winter weather has also hit the Dakotas, where thousands are without power.
