A legal expert said on Thursday that he was surprised by a recent Supreme Court ruling that could make it more difficult for President Donald Trump to achieve a key policy goal.
This week, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Trump cannot deploy National Guard troops to Chicago, arguing that he has not proven that appropriate conditions exist.
Adam Klasfeld, editor-in-chief of All Rise News, discussed the ruling with progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen in a new reaction video. Klasfeld said he was surprised by the "nature" of the ruling, given that the court has made it easier for Trump to pursue other goals, such as politicizing independent agencies.
"What the Supreme Court has done has elevated the standard by which they have made it so much harder for Trump to federalize and deploy the National Guard, saying the only way that he fulfills that prong of the statute is if the regular laws of the United States cannot be fulfilled using the military," Klasfeld said. "And that's a very high standard."
"Anytime that the Supreme Court reaches this emphatic ruling against Trump, that is surprising," he added.
"And they went there on Christmas week," Klasfeld said. "They handed Trump a major defeat."
