Susie Wiles marked her final day as White House chief of staff on Friday as President Donald Trump named Stephen Miller to replace her in the wake of the Republican Party’s historic midterm rout.
“Today is my last day as White House Chief of Staff,” Wiles wrote on X. “Serving President Trump in the White House has been the honor of a lifetime.”
Wiles, the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff, said she was proud of “what we’ve accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First.” She also thanked the “extraordinary people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside.”
“While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will,” she wrote.
Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday that Miller, his deputy chief of staff and the driving force behind his immigration crackdown, would take over the job Monday. Trump said Wiles, who “has done an outstanding job,” would be “moving over to the Trump Political Operation.”
The shakeup follows recent reporting that Wiles and her allies would be scapegoated if the GOP lost this week’s elections.
White House reporter Jennifer Jacobs noted the timing, writing that Wiles’ last day came “three days after major GOP defeats in the midterm elections.”
Critics were quick to weigh in on Wiles’ legacy.
“You led the worst-run administration under the worst president in history. Enjoy your place in history,” writer and activist Charlotte Clymer posted.
“History will judge you. And it will not go well,” wrote political scientist Norman Ornstein.
“Knives are out,” the anti-Trump Lincoln Project posted.
Wiles also drew criticism from the right. “Good! Buh bye!” wrote attorney Robert Barnes.
Miller takes over a White House that insiders describe as demoralized and splintering, with some staffers reportedly being advised to seek legal counsel as a “precaution.”
“There is no holding back on the desire to leave now,” one former White House official told MS NOW. “Some are making calls to try and jump ship.”
