Taxpayers footing the bill for Trump Mar-a-Lago party even as shutdown deprives 800,000 workers of pay

Friday marked day seven of the government shutdown that has left 800,000 federal employees without pay over the holidays.

The financial straits federal employees might face, however, will not mar the first family's holiday activities.

As Rolling Stone reports, the Secret Service paid Grimes Events & Party Tents Inc. of Delray Beach, Florida, $54,020 for a tent rental for Mar-a-Lago, the Trump family's vacation compound.

The tents are intended for the end of the year party at the resort. This year, tickets to the party go for $1,000.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management tweeted advice to the furloughed employees going without pay, instructing them to consult their personal attorneys.

In addition to the estimated 800,000 workers who won't be getting a paycheck this week, the shutdown has led to the shuttering of national parks.

According to a recent poll, 47 percent of Americans blame the shutdown on President Donald Trump. The President continues to demand funding for a border wall he previously pledged would be funded by Mexico—Democrats in the House have refused to yield to the President's demands.

The shutdown is expected to last into the New Year.
