Tennessee GOPer busted in texting scandal announces retirement — 'shortest-serving speaker’ in 100 years
The Republican lawmaker who made history as the shortest-serving speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives since the 19th century announced on Wednesday he would not be seeking re-election.
"Williamson County Rep. Glen Casada, who became one of Tennessee's most powerful Republicans in his 20-year career and served briefly as speaker before resigning the post amid a scandal, will not seek reelection next year," the Tennesseanreported. "Casada resigned his post as speaker in 2019 after facing widespread criticism, including some from his own party, amid a texting scandal over sexually explicit and racist conversations with his former chief of staff Cade Cothren."
In January, the FBI raided the lawmaker's home and office. Cothren's home was also raided, along with the homes of two other GOP lawmakers.
"Although federal officials have not released exact details of the investigation, Casada and other lawmakers were all involved in a bitter GOP primary battle in 2020 and spent tens of thousands of campaign dollars with little-known companies whose exact owners remain mysterious," the newspaper reported.
